Patients Roll Out Of Rooms During Gas Leak At Clinic

POSTED: 7:54 am EDT June 24, 2008
UPDATED: 12:30 pm EDT June 24, 2008

A natural gas leak at the Cleveland Clinic caused patients to roll out of their rooms Tuesday, NewsChannel5 reported.

Officials said a backhoe used by a construction worker was responsible for the leak that interrupted several morning business meetings and forced the evacuation of the two main buildings at the clinic.

The leak happened just before 8 a.m. at East 96th Street and Carnegie Avenue. That is also near the Intercontinental Hotel.

Hundreds of hotel residents and in-patients from the hospitals' G Building were transferred to other buildings and even sent outside to wait while the Cleveland Fire Department and Dominion East Ohio Gas worked to secure the leak.

Cleveland Clinic officials said they practiced routine emergency evacuations and even though this is described by officials as a minor leak, today's hospital evacuation went according to plan.

"Thankfully no one was injured and everyone came together and made sure that we had the right information and all the facts right, and we did that. We did the best thing for in-patients and employees, and all went according to plan," said clinic spokeswoman Eileen Sheil,

There were some problems with the gas company. Once Dominion officials found the leak they had difficulty finding the valves to turn off the gas.

Fire department officials blame confusion on construction in the area.

"I am sure that they should have some type of idea where the shutoffs are, but again when you are dealing with a large construction situation like this, there are several things going on. But once they identified it, they did shut it down successfully," said Larry Gray with the Cleveland Fire Department.

Hospital operations returned to normal at 8:50 a.m. The majority of buildings on the main campus were not affected.
