WOOSTER, Ohio -- Officials believe that a body found in a Wayne County field may be that of a 14-year-old Wooster girl who has been missing for days.
NewsChannel5's Tony Gaskins reported that it's not yet confirmed whether the remains are the body of Kristen Jackson (pictured, right), but forensic tests will soon be performed.
Investigators said that the body was found late Saturday afternoon, as dozens of supporters fanned out in a massive search Saturday for Kristen.
The volunteers joined more than 50 FBI agents and local authorities, and they searched several square miles on foot.
Although it's believed Kristen's body was found, officials said the search will continue for any other evidence in the case.
Fellow church members and friends of the Jackson family were drained of hope but vowed to help any way they could, even if it meant pointing authorities to remains of the 14-year-old.
"It's been a tremendous amount of support, so we're just trying to cover the area as best we can, and hopefully something shows up," said Stan Johnson, a family friend.
Wayne County sheriff's investigators believe they have the man responsible for Jackson's disappearance. Joel Yockey, 46, was arrested on a parole violation, but he has not yet been charged in this case.
Yockey (pictured, below) was released from prison last March after serving 15 years for kidnapping and raping a 17-year-old girl. He lived with his parents, just yards from the Jackson home.
"If they have him, I would make him hurt until he spoke, until he told where she is, to give this family some closure," said Deb Johnson, a family friend.
Kristen was last seen Sept. 9. She went to the Wayne County Fair but failed to meet her parents as planned.
With Yockey in custody, authorities are treading very carefully in their investigation.
"I must inform you, we have reached a delicate point in this investigation, and I must be very careful about the information that is released," sheriff Thomas Maurer said. "We will not be answering any questions."
Suspect Is Sex Offender
Police said that Yockey is classified as a sex offender, but nobody in the neighborhood knew anything about it.
NewsChannel5's Angie Lau reported that, in a judicial twist, authorities didn't have to tell anyone in the area that he was back on the streets when he was released from prison six months ago.
In 1986, Yockey kidnapped and raped a 17-year-old girl. The 46-year-old is a sex offender, but in Wayne County, he is classified as a sexually oriented offender, required only to report to authorities once a year and not subject to community notification.
That means neighbors like the Smith family, who live just steps away, never knew.
"I have a 12-year-old daughter, and it could have been my daughter," Kathy Smith said. "It makes me sick to think about that."
Kristen lived one street over from Yockey, but often she was seen on his street, riding her bicycle to her grandparents' house. They lived just a few doors down from Yockey, NewsChannel5 reported.
"She'd go down to her grandma's and wave every time she'd go by," said Ivan Stillwagner, a neighbor of the suspect.
Stillwagner is heartbroken over the disappearance. He said that if he had known, he would have moved to protect his grandsons, like David Laird, who recognizes Yockey as the "man who always said hi."
"(He) kind of made me nervous, because there was something I didn't like about him," David said
