AKRON, Ohio -- A University of Akron basketball player and another student pleaded not guilty in court Monday to charges alleging they shot at police.

Rydell Brooks, 20, and Edward Davis were arrested Saturday night, NewsChannel5 reported.

Akron detectives said that Brooks, a sophomore at UA, was arrested after a routine traffic stop. They said he fled from the vehicle and fired shots at the officers. The officers were not hit.

After a short foot pursuit, Brooks was arrested.

His older brother said he isn't buying the allegations.

"It's got to be some false accusation or something like that. That ain't his lifestyle. That's not something he'd do. He would do nothing like that. He just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. I'm pretty sure he didn't do nothing like that," said Corey Brooks.

"No one takes this very lightly, but right now all we have are allegations, the boys' families don't know what happened. We're going to try to find that out but we need to let the investigation unwind," said defense attorney Jon Sinn.

Rydell Brooks and Davis were charged with attempted murder and felonious assault. They are each being held on $1 million bonds.

A prosecutor said in court that police found guns, gloves and masks in their car.

The case goes to the grand jury later this month.

Brooks joined the Zips last year. He was a 2006 Buchtel High School graduate. He transferred to Akron from Niagara University to join the men's basketball team.

Brooks averaged 4.7 points in starting 30 of 35 games as a freshman in 2006-07 for the Purple Eagles, whom he helped qualify for the NCAA tournament.

He sat out the 2007-08 season for the Zips and is eligible to play the next three seasons.
