LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- A Lakewood assisted living senior center announced it was closing its doors, effective immediately, NewsChannel5 reported.
For hundreds of senior citizens at the Barton Center, this means no more socials, activities or meals.
According to a letter sent to residents, Barton Center said it shut down in order to retain insurance.
The Barton Center provides meals, a convenient grocery store and a car to run errands. It is also a place for seniors to make friends, enjoy activities and educational programs. The center's programs are a benefit of being a resident at the Westerly Apartments.
WEWS said Barton Center officials would not make any comment other comment than that the closure is temporary as they search for another insurance company.
Residents who attended the closed-door meetings today were told that after Sept. 11, 2001, insurance companies are reluctant to insure high rises.
