Police Capture Man Accused Of Threatening To Kill Sheriff's Employees

POSTED: 6:53 am EDT May 15, 2008
UPDATED: 1:33 pm EDT May 15, 2008

Ashland police said authorities captured a man who is suspected of threatening to kill sheriff's department employees.

Officials found 41-year-old Larry Carter hiding in some woods in an area about a mile northeast of Jeromesville. He was wanted in connection with an aggravated menacing investigation.

A 911 caller alerted officers at 4 p.m. Wednesday that Carter planned to come to the sheriff's department and kill all of the employees before taking his own life.

Officers from Ashland, Wayne and Richland counties had been searching for Carter in an area east of County Road 175, north of Township Road 1650 and south of Township Road 1550.

Officers said Carter was wearing body armor, carrying several weapons and considered dangerous.

Officers began the manhunt after a truck fitting the description of Carter's was involved in an accident on U.S. 250 near Interstate 71. The truck fled south along a nearby county road with heavy damage to the front.

His truck was located at about 4 a.m. on County Road 175. Deputies determined that Carter had recently been at the residence and was possibly still in the area on foot

Officials set up a perimeter around the home and the Ashland County Sheriff's Office requested assistance from the Special Response Teams of the Ashland Police Division and the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

While tactical officers were coordinating an action plan, a man was seen in a wooded area to the south of the residence.

SRT personnel found Carter hiding along the northern edge of the tree line at 10:04 a.m. He was taken into custody without incident and incarcerated at the Ashland County Jail.

No weapons were found. Charges are pending.

The Ashland County Sheriff's Office requested additional assistance from the Richland County Sheriff's Office, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, the Ashland and Richland Posts of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Mifflin Police Department and the Perrysville Police Department.
