LAGRANGE, Ohio -- A mother of three attacked and left for dead on Tuesday may be paralyzed.

Matthew Plas, 25, is accused of attacking the woman as she took her daily walk. He made his first court appearance on Wednesday, NewsChannel5 reported.

Judge Lisa Locke Graves denied Plas bond.

"I'm finding you pose a danger, a substantial risk to the community. I'm going to impose a no-release condition," Graves said.

Plas is charged with attempted murder and kidnapping. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in jail.

Police said the attack happened just after 1 p.m. Tuesday at the equestrian center in the Metroparks' Carlisle Reservation in Lorain County.

The 43-year-old woman told police a man she saw fishing beat her with a branch, shot her in the back and put her in the trunk of his car and drove off. He later dumped her a couple of miles away.

Authorities said some witnesses saw the woman hanging out of the trunk and called 911.

"I got around the other side of them cars and I seen a body laying there, a woman," resident Mike Edwards said.

He said she was weak but awake when he found her.

Investigators are trying to figure out if the woman was sexually assaulted.

"He has provided some detail and it does not appear that they have any type of relationship, that they knew each other, whether they were boyfriend-girlfriend so we're trying to see exactly how they crossed paths," said Capt. Richard Resendez with the Lorain County Sheriff's Department.

The woman's husband said his wife does not know her attacker.

Investigators said Plas is married but homeless. His wife currently has a civil protection order against him and police said that's why he was living in his car in the park. Plas also served jail time in 2006 for domestic violence.

The doctors at MetroHealth Medical Center said they think the 43-year-old woman will recover. However, her husband told NewsChannel5 that she will be paralyzed from the waist down.
