CLEVELAND -- California, New York and New Jersey have all chosen to make some bars and restaurants smoke-free.
According to NewsChannel5, the Great Lakes Brewing Co. will snuff out smoking in all part of its establishment soon.
Great Lakes Brewing Co. would be the first bar and restaurant in Cleveland to ban smoking.
Pat Conway, Great Lakes Brewing Co. owner, knows that it is a big chance, but he is willing to take it because of the health of customers and employees, the trouble with cleaning the ventilation system and how cigarette smoke affects the smell and taste of food.
"Well it is risky," Conway said. "We might take some heat from regulars who are smokers, but we feel in the long run it's better for the company because it's protecting our consumers and protecting our staff because secondary smoke is very harmful and it's been proven over and over again," Conway said.
The last day that patrons will be able to smoke is Aug. 31.
Great Lakes will close for six days to thoroughly clean the restaurant and then reopen Sept. 14, which is also the restaurant's anniversary, totally smoke-free.
