A man and his grandson were killed Tuesday when a fire truck collided with a minivan.

Officials said a Massillon fire truck collided with the 1996 Dodge Caravan at about 8:30 a.m. on Walnut Street at Johnson Street in Massillon.

4-Year-Old, Grandfather Killed In Crash

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Ronald E. Anderson, 72, of Massillon, and his grandson, Javarre Tate, 4, were killed in the crash. Anderson died at the scene. Tate was thrown from the van. He was taken to Affinity Medical Center Doctor's Campus, where he was pronounced dead.

Officials said a fire ladder truck with lights and sirens operating struck the van broadside while heading to a car fire in the city.

Four firefighters were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries, including the driver, Susan Toles, 47, of Canton.

Officials said that Toles is a distant cousin of Anderson. Three of the firefighters, including Toles, have been released from the hospital. The fourth firefighters is still hospitalized and his condition is not known.

Early reports indicated that the minivan pulled in front of the fire truck, NewsChannel5 reported.

Massillon police asked the Highway Patrol to investigate the crash.
