Breeder Says Protestors Got Wrong Store

Protesters Says Puppies Come From Puppy Mills

Dozens of people from a group called Marilyn's Voice protested outside a Willoughby pet store saying they fear it is filled by a puppy mill.

The puppies are being sold from a leased space at the West Point Shopping Center at the corner of Euclid Avenue and SOM Center.

The breeders said that the protestors have the wrong store.

"If we could turn one person on to a rescue or a shelter where an animal is saved, then we've done our job," said Kristina Lange, organizer of Marilyn's Voice.

The group is pushing to stop puppy abuse across the state. The protestors are worried that the store in Willoughby gets its pets from puppy mills.

"We would like to know where are the parents of these puppies why are there so many different breeds? Who is breeding them? And why are they not being more discerning about where the puppies are going?" Lange asked.

Breeder Steve Lightner said they have answers to the questions.

"It's new breeders, new puppies every week," said Lightner.

He has been breeding puppies for five years. Lightner said they've never had any problems with unhealthy puppies or shady breeders. And to make sure it stays that way, they have a strict business plan in place.

"Every week we visit the homes of the puppies that will be here. So we actually take a look at them, look at their healthy records," Lightner said. "I'm not for puppy mills either. We turn down a lot of people, by the way, and we dont' allow them here. Even an unclean home, unclean conditions in the home, I don't allow."

Lange said she hopes the puppies are OK, but said her group isn't backing down.

"We won't stop until we've closed every puppy mill and every pet store," said Lange.
