Statement From Coalition
"YES, we oppose the death penalty in each and every case -- therefore our website is strictly anti-death penalty. There are a lot of women writing, but also a lot of men, sometimes a whole family writes to an inmate. No death row prisoner has access to the Internet. They write us by snail mail and we edit their writings for the ads we put in the Internet. We are working directly with the prisoner, means that we don't copy ads like other organizations do. We need the prisoner writing to us. That it is really him/her is clear by the sender and the postmark of the post office and the prison. We answer all letters we get, therefore we hear from many prisoners not only once.Don't ask questions about the case, does not mean, don't ask what your pen friend has done. However, we have always to keep in mind that the inmates are in the middle of their appeals and case-info that is part of the appeals should never be discussed in a letter. There is also a lot of data available in the Internet and we inform the pen friends about the crime the inmate has done if the pen friends wish this. This is not about downplaying of the henious crimes some have committed. ALIVE is for hard but fair punishment, but the death penalty is no option for us, because we cannot see any positive coming from that.We know that this issue is very sensitive and we try to keep this always in mind."Kind regards, Petra E.
