UPDATED: 12:31 pm EDT April 24, 2008

Eight children were taken to a hospital Thursday morning after their school bus hit a car.

The Richmond Heights Elementary School bus was approaching a red light on Chardon Road when it hit the car in front of it.

Eight students were treated and released from an area hospital. Twelve other students on the bus were not hurt.

Of the 20 students on the bus, 12 have gone home for the day.

A school representative said the driver of the bus was a woman who had worked for the district for two years and she had never been in an accident before.

She was cited by police, the representative said.
