A Holmes County deputy was in the hospital on Sunday after being shot with his own gun, NewsChannel5 reported.

The sheriff said Sgt. Wade Johnson may have accidentally shot himself while trying to remove his firearm.

The bullet entered his stomach and lodged in his pelvis. Johnson is in serious but stable condition at Akron General Hospital.

The 17-year veteran had responded to a call at the Burger King just after midnight.

The incident is under investigation.
