Bond Set At $5M For Man Accused Of Locking Wife In Cage

A man accused of handcuffing his new bride inside a dog cage and threatening to kill her made his first appearance in a Canton courtroom Thursday.

Matthew George, 28, faces four separate charges that include felonious assault and abduction.

His wife, Mary, was in the courtroom with two domestic violence advocates. The prosecutor asked for a temporary protection order on her behalf, which was granted.

Court documents state that Matthew George, after being married for just four days, hit his 26-year-old bride in the face and then locked her in a dog cage.

Records state that at that time, he fired three shots from a 45-caliber handgun and threatened to kill her.

Because of that, prosecutors asked that his $500,000 bond be increased. Judge Richard Kubilius did so, increasing bond to $5 million.

Mary George and her father met with the city prosecutor Thursday morning about the next step. NewsChannel5 was told she's expected to file for a divorce.

"The family is very concerned these acts of treating someone like an animal are intolerable. They wanted help and our office took action, asking for increased bond, getting a protection order in our court and domestic violence court, and also she feels a sense of helplessness. We'll assist her along the way," said Canton city prosecutor Frank Forchione.

This wasn't Matthew George's first accusation of domestic violence. A year and a half ago he was arrested for the same crime after allegedly refusing to let Mary leave the home.

On Mary's behalf, that charge was reduced to disorderly conduct.
