Teacher Says She Was Assaulted, Videotaped

Student Accused Of Attack

UPDATED: 4:15 pm EDT April 9, 2008

A local teacher said she was beaten by a student inside her classroom in an attack that was caught on camera.

The video, taken from a cell phone, showed up on MySpace. It shows a classroom fight, and Jolita Berry said the person at the bottom being beaten is her, WBAL-TV in Baltimore reported.

Berry said the attack happened Friday.

Berry, an art teacher at Reginald F. Lewis High School, said she told a student to sit down and behave just before the attack occurred.

"I looked over, and her friends were cheering her on," Berry said. "And before I knew it, she hit me in the face."

Other teachers helped break up the fight. Berry said she was shocked by the response she received from the school's principal.

"On one hand, she told me that she is sorry that this happened to me," Berry said. "But then she turned right around and told me that telling a student that I was going to defend myself was a trigger word. I triggered them."

The chief of Baltimore City school police said they would begin an investigation on Wednesday.
