Students Accused Of Sharing Prescription Drugs At School

POSTED: 3:58 pm EDT April 8, 2008
UPDATED: 11:29 am EDT April 9, 2008

Some students at an area school are facing serious charges for bringing prescription pain pills to school and sharing them with others.

The Jackson Township ninth grades were charged with drug trafficking after allegedly bringing the prescription pills from home.

The school principal said this wasn't a drug ring, but it was a violation of the student code of conduct.

Similarly, police said the students broke the law and some of them are facing felony charges.

"If you actually live in the state of Ohio, if you share a prescription drug and you give it to somebody -- you don't have to profit from it that just by giving it to somebody -- it's considered trafficking," said Dave Zink, of the Jackson Township police.

Police said they broke the case when another student told a school staff member what was happening.

Authorities said the students were using the painkiller Vicodin and another drug called Adderall, which is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity.

One experience pharmacist said the two drugs are a very odd combination.

"The Adderall actually acts as a stimulant in somebody that's not hyperactive, so they're probably using it as speed to stay up at night," said Village Green pharmacist Mark Coberly. "The Vicodin I'm sure they're just using to create a buzz."

Police said the students could be expelled from school.
