CLEVELAND -- A school bus carrying students from the Arts Academy of West Cleveland rolled down a hill and crashed into a bridge Monday morning. The Cleveland Fire Department said 14 children were transported to MetroHealth Medical Center and St. Vincent Charity Hospital. There was no immediate word on their condition. The bus driver stopped at a gas station at about 8 a.m. to use the bathroom while the children waited on the bus.The bus rolled down the hill and hit a bridge abutment for the Inner Belt Bridge.The gas station manager said he saw the bus rolling and banged on the restroom to alert the driver. Then he and another employee chased the bus.About five children jumped off the bus and onto the road as the bus rolled downhill.A fire department spokesman said the bus was carrying 27 students from kindergarten through seventh grade.A student who tried to stop the bus is being called a hero by officials. His parents picked him up at the scene and he went home.The bus driver, who ran down the hill after the bus, was taken to a hospital with chest pains.The bus is operated by Aqua Limousine Ground Transportation.
