Experts: 3 Of 4 Homes Are Underinsured

Find Out What You Need To Know To Protect Your Home

POSTED: 2:39 p.m. EDT July 25, 2002

How do you know if you have enough homeowner's insurance?

Betcha Didn't Know that according to experts, three out of four homes are underinsured. On Your Side Troubleshooter Chris Caswell reported on how to protect yourself.

Studies show that most homeowners don't carry enough coverage to rebuild their homes if a disaster strikes.

"A loss of any kind -- destruction of the home in full or part -- could result in dollars out of your pocket if that home is not insured up to its full potential," insurance agent John Katzbach said.

Betcha Didn't Know that insurance companies are covering less now than they did in the past -- they are capping their coverage.

"If you had a $100,000 dwelling and a company had a replacement cap of 125 percent -- beyond that in damage, beyond that $125,000 -- that's out of your pocket," Katzbach said.

Also, construction costs are on the rise. It costs more to build your house now than it did years ago. So when you add on to your home or make major improvements, touch base with your agent.

"Potentially, that person with that $25,000 addition now has, if (his or her) home wasn't insured properly, now (he or she is) $25,000 underinsured," Katzbach said.

The best way to protect yourself and your home is to fill out your questionnaires, Katzbach said. He said that it helps your agent know what and how much to insure.

He said that in some cases, a rate increase may be a small price to pay.

"But I would rather have the coverage and premium raised than be in a position where I have a loss and I'm not covered," Katzbach said.

Katzbach also said that when you insure your home, insure only the value of your house -- don't insure the value of the land.
