Police Shoot At Man Trying To Stop Hostage Situation

AMHERST, Ohio -- Amherst police shot at a man who had wrestled a gun away from another man. Police arrested the two men at about 11:50 p.m. Wednesday after a hostage situation. Officers said it all started when a citizen told them another man had a gun downtown. When police investigated, they found Robert Gonzalez, 50, holding a gun to his wife's head. Somehow, the citizen who alerted police got the gun away from Gonzalez and then started running toward police. That's when another officer who just arrived at the scene shot at him, but missed. Both men are in custody.A loaded 9 mm handgun was recovered from the scene.Gonzalez was charged with kidnapping, carrying a concealed weapon, aggravated menacing, domestic violence and criminal damaging. He is being held in the Lorain County Jail without bond. Additional charges are pending.The male citizen was arrested on an outstanding warrant from another police agency and charges may be pending from the Amherst Police Department.The incident remains under investigation.
