UPDATED: 3:18 pm EST February 8, 2008

The mother of a 16-year-old who was shot and killed by police in 2002 was awarded $1 million in a settlement Friday.

Ricardo Mason was a passenger in a car that police said was stolen. After a short pursuit, police cornered the vehicle and ordered Mason and the teen driver to show their hands.

Instead, the driver backed into the officers, one of whom opened fire, shooting Mason in the back.

Mason's mother sued Officer Robert Taylor, who fired the fatal shots, and Officer Matthew Baeppler, who was also involved in the pursuit.
