CLEVELAND -- Three men held for setting off a firecracker at Jacobs Field this week have been formally charged. Clifton Oliver, 22, Donald Kreiger, 22, and Andrew Mendez, 20 -- all from Elyria, Ohio -- were charged with felonious assault and aggravated arson Friday. They may be arraigned Saturday.
Two people were injured in the blast, caused when the men allegedly tossed an 8-inch professional-grade firework from the upper deck into a lower-level smoking area. Many fans were looking over their shoulders at Thursday's game."Our seats are in the same area," said Rodney Dunlap, a father of two. "We'd (have) been sitting here when that came over, too."Dunlap and his two children sat near the blast site at Thursday's game. "They should serve time and pay a healthy fine for what they (have) done to these people," he said.Meanwhile, scrutiny was widespread at Jacobs Field gates Tuesday. Searches of purses and bags went on as usual, but security was stepped up. Parents sitting in the smoking section point out the obvious problems with using illegal fireworks at the stadium."Like with 9/11, you do it in a public place; with 40,000 people, you can cause a panic or whatever," said Ronald Weeber, a worried father. Most of the fans with whom NewsChannel5 spoke have the utmost confidence in Jacobs Field security."It's not going to stop me from going to the ballpark," one fan said. "It might have me looking up, but it's not going to stop me from coming."Pieces of the firework used in the blast have been sent to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms for possible federal charges against the three suspects.
