SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio -- A Shaker Heights attorney was brutally attacked New Year's Eve by seven people while exercising before dinner near the Shaker Heights-Cleveland border, police say.

Scott McDermott, 52, suffered a shattered leg and a beating to the face. The incident happened at East 146th Street and Onaway Boulevard.

McDermott said his attackers, who were believed to be teens, beat his leg with a pipe, but they also had a knife and a gun.

He was taken to Hillcrest Hospital where he underwent surgery. He now has seven pins and a plate in his leg.

It's unclear what the attackers wanted because McDermott was not carrying any valuables.
