Cleveland Sees Highest Number Of Homicides In 12 Years

134 Homicides Investigated In 2007

Cleveland police have one more homicide to investigate as the year 2007 comes to a close.

On Monday morning, 31-year-old Kenneth Grove was beaten to death in front of a home on Parkhill. Police believe he was attacked and killed after he tried to rob a man at gunpoint.

The number of homicides in Cleveland this year is a big concern among residents and city leaders, reported NewsChannel5's Bob Jones.

In September, 16-year-old Brandon Marshall became Cleveland's 97th homicide victim of the year while walking to his aunt's house, and police arrested a 17-year-old boy in connection with the killing.

Since that fatal shooting, Cleveland detectives have responded to 34 more city homicides.

The total of 134 homicides in 2007 is the highest number Cleveland has seen in 12 years.

Last year, police investigated 119 homicides. This year, 54 of the 134 slayings remain unsolved.

Councilwoman Nina Turner sits on the safety committee and said she believes more guns and drugs available on the streets and a struggling economy contributed to the rising homicide rate.

Turner said the root of the problem starts in homes.

Brandon Marshall's mother and stepfather, Regina and Bryan Shepherd, are now part of a group called Mothers Against Youth Violence.

Starting next week, she and others who have lost children to violence will begin a Mother Of Pain tour to speak out against the rising violence on the streets.

Regina Shepherd said the group will speak at schools, youth detention centers and community events.
