Zack Reed Goes To Rehab After DUI Arrest

POSTED: 5:40 am EST November 21, 2007
UPDATED: 12:14 pm EST November 22, 2007

Cleveland City Councilman Zack Reed went directly to rehab at the Cleveland Clinic after being released from jail Wednesday.

Reed, 45, posted bond after being charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

His attorneys said Reed will get treatment for the alcohol abuse that has tarnished an otherwise bright political career, NewsChannel5 reported.

Reed was arrested early Wednesday morning on the city's southeast side after police found him passed out in his 2002 BMW 525i at about 3 a.m. at East 139th Street and Kinsman Avenue, according to police. They said that a person directed them to Reed's car.

Police said Reed refused a field sobriety test and that's when police arrested him.

He was taken to the Bratenahl Police Department for a Breathalyzer test. Reed refused that test, as well, police said.

Witnesses said they saw Reed at the Cavs game then in the Warehouse District drinking.

He was issued an Administration License Suspension in accordance with the provisions of the Ohio Revised Code.

Reed is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

Cleveland City Council President Martin Sweeney released a statement on Wednesday regarding Reed's arrest, saying the council is "concerned for the well-being of our colleague and his attempts to get his personal life in order."

This is not Reed's first arrest in connection with driving under the influence.

He was arrested in April 2005. He pleaded no contest and was sentenced to 10 days in jail. He was also ordered to wear an alcohol-monitoring device.

During that arrest, Zack was unable to recite his ABCs and his blood-alcohol level registered twice the legal limit.
