Some Power Restored After Underground Fire In Akron

FirstEnergy aid it has restored power to all but two or three buildings in downtown Akron after an underground fire broke out Tuesday.

A company representative said crews will be working of one circuit Wednesday morning when people return to work. That could mean more outages.

The fire broke out around 1 p.m. at an Edison power vault at 326 South Main, near Canal Park.

Power was knocked out for abour 300 customers. Main was blocked off from Exchange to State Street and several building in the area were evacuated as a precaution. No injuries were reported.

There were also reports of some people being stuck in elevators when the power went out, and firefighters responded to those calls as well.

Firefighters had to use foam to put out the eletrical fire.

The outage affected the entire side of the street, including the police department, City Hall and the First Energy.
