WELLINGTON, Ohio -- A 16-year-old son of a preacher is accused of killing his mother and critically wounding his father in Elyria.

Daniel Petric appeared before a juvenile magistrate Monday and was charged with murder and attempted murder in the shooting death of 43-year-old Sue Petric. Her husband, Reverend Marc Petric, was shot in the face and is hospitalized in critical condition.

Investigators call the Wellington High School junior the sole suspect in the crime. Petric must be tried as an adult according to state law

The sheriff's department responded to a 911 call at the family's Brighton Township home Saturday night. When they arrived they found 43-year-old Sue Petric dead and her 45-year-old husband Marc shot and in bad shape, officials said. Marc is in critical condition at MetroHealth Medical Center.

Sheriff: Son Is Sole Person Responsible For Shooting

"There were three people inside the residence when this occurred; the two Petric parents and Daniel," said Rich Resendez with the sheriff's department.

Police said Daniel told them why he shot his parents, but they're not releasing the motive.

The sheriff's department said the couple's oldest daughter, Heidi, 21, and her husband were coming to the house to watch the Indians game, but when they arrived shortly before 7 p.m., police said, they were greeted at the door by her brother Daniel. Police said he would not let them inside.

"They knew something was wrong. He was excited. They heard noises coming from inside. They forced their way in and found the two victims there," Resendez said.

Police said Daniel left the home in the family's van. He was spotted and stopped by Wellington police minutes later.

Police believe they found the murder weapon inside the home. They expect test results to show that Daniel used his father's gun to shoot his parents.

Marc Petric is the pastor at the New Life Assembly of God Church in Wellington.

Members of the church left Sunday services hugging and wiping away tears.

The congregation is looking to each other for strength and offering their love and prayers to the Petric family.

Church members said Marc is a beloved pastor, and Sue was always willing to listen and help others.

The family's other daughter Holly, 17, is staying with relatives.
