Sanders To Unveil New School Security Plan Friday

Cleveland Public Schools CEO Dr. Eugene Sanders will unveil a new security plan Friday, almost 48 hours after the shootings at Success Tech, where a student opened fire on classmates and teachers.

Sanders will present the plan to Mayor Frank Jackson by noon and will reveal it to the public later in the day.

The most pressing issue is security after Wednesday's shooting spree.

Cleveland Teacher's Union spokeswoman Joanne Demarco outlined what they want: metal detectors in every building, school social workers brought back, a district-wide discipline plan, and staff and student training on how to deal with anti-social behavior.

"I want the Cleveland community to know that our schools are really safe," Demarco said. "I mean, it's only recently that we've seen this trend with weapons. It's what's going on in the streets, the gangs, the drug addictions. But schools are supposed to be safe places for kids and that's what we want in Cleveland."

Demarco said Success Tech teachers will meet with Sanders on Friday as well.

Parents are also passing along their suggestions to the district.

Parent Mara Rivera thinks every student should carry and show an ID card.

"So aside from an identification card, strong security but real security," she said.

Trivone Simpson's daughter also attends a Cleveland school.

"Parents just need to take the streets back. That's all. Metal detectors, security guards, and as far as the security, they need something to protect them other than handcuffs," Simpson said.
