Fire Breaks Out In Molasses Room At Sugar Plant

CLEVELAND -- Cleveland firefighters responded to a triple-alarm blaze at the Domino Sugar warehouse next to Pierre's Ice Cream on Thursday morning. The fire was at the sugar plant on Euclid Avenue at East 65th Street. Several fire trucks and 35 firefighters were at the scene, NewsChannel5 reported. Employees of the sugar plant and Pierre's were evacuated. The fire started before 4 a.m. during the third shift overnight. Officials said the fire was contained to Domino Sugar, but smoke filled the alley between the warehouse and Pierre's for some time.Firefighters said the blaze started in the molasses room. It has large gas heaters on the ceiling to heat the molasses to make brown sugar. Officials said the fire was in the roof, between the top and a big metal barrier on the bottom.Firefigters were tearing down the roof of that room to put out any hot spots.No inuries were reported.Domino Sugar has been in business for about 27 years, employees said.
