KENT, Ohio -- Kent State University students are on edge after they learned an attack may have happened on campus. The campus police chief told NewsChannel5 that he believes an attack took place, but whether a full-fledged investigation takes place is up to the victim.Early Thursday morning, Kent university police received a third-party report that a woman returning from an off-campus party was sexually assaulted by three men on or near campus.News of the attack spread quickly. The University police are being proactive by e-mailing an advisory and warning students, letting them know that someone was attacked, but investigators' hands are tied. They cannot pursue the case because the alleged victim is not giving them any information."It's very common for a variety of reasons. Society still tends to place blame on the victim, unlike other crimes. Typically, if your house is burglarized, people don't ask you, 'Well, why do live in a nice house, why do you live in a nice neighborhood," said Summit-Medina rape crisis center manager Anne Spahr.Spahr said all too often rape victims often blame themselves for what happened to them."A lot of times the victims know the perpetrator, so that complicates the situation further. They may have prior relationship, they may be acquaintances. That's actually the case in 80 percent of sexual assaults, so it's very common for people to report," said Spahr.Spahr said if she could talk to the victim, she'd tell her it is not her fault what happened to her. Rape victims who need help can call the rape crisis center at 877-906-RAPE.Meanwhile, police are reminding students to walk with friends or use the campus escort service, and if you drink, drink responsibly.
