CLEVELAND -- Accidents involving semitrailers are occurring more and more around the Cleveland area, so much so that Cuyahoga County leads the state in semi trailer-related fatal crashes.According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, semis were involved in 11 deadly crashes in 2006, which is up from 2005 and 2004.To combat those numbers, the patrol has hired a full-time commercial vehicle inspector.Inspections include checking the tires and brakes, looking to see if the driver is alert and to see if the truck's load is secure. On average, the inspector will look at eight trucks a day. Some of those inspections will last up to an hour or more. The inspector can go anywhere in Cuyahoga County, but at least twice a week he has to be on the freeways, specifically in two trouble spots known for deadly crashes: I-77 at I-480 and I-90 near Dead Man's Curve.According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, fatigue is the No. 1 cause of crashes when it comes to semi trucks.
