Zoo Euthanizes Kangaroo After Train Accident

POSTED: 12:12 pm EDT July 25, 2007
UPDATED: 12:29 pm EDT July 26, 2007

The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo had to euthanize a 1-year-old kangaroo following an accident with the zoo's train ride in the Australian Adventure exhibit.

The female kangaroo suffered severe injuries, and the zoo's veterinary staff was not able to save her. She was put to sleep Tuesday afternoon.

A preliminary investigation found that the train's operator did not see the kangaroo lying on the tracks and hit it. The zoo terminated the employment of the operator.

Planners already ordered new fencing so similar accidents don't happen again.
