Twins Get Kidney Transplants In Same Week

Adoptive Dad, Stranger Donate Organ

A Sandusky family made some life-changing decisions that resulted in an amazing story of a patchwork family that was meant to be.

Fate was not looking good for Cameron and Jacob, twins born in Seattle with badly underdeveloped kidneys and a mother who walked away right after they were born.

So, who would have guessed that in Sandusky, Beth and Rick Meadows would change the boys' future with just a glance, reported NewsChannel5's Alicia Booth.

"We were looking to adopt one more time, and I was looking at some of the listing Web pages on the Internet and I found them. That was it, I was in love," said Beth.

But love would not be enough to save the boys' lives.

The Meadows knew their adopted sons would need kidney transplants and that finding donors would be tough.

But what happened next told the Meadows that this family was meant to be.

"Seeing them scream and cry, getting their blood work, it's just like, you've got to stop this, got to do something," said Rick Meadows.

Rick was tested as a potential donor and matched with both boys. Last week, surgeons successfully transplanted one of Rick's kidneys into Cameron.

Finding another donor for Jacob could have taken years, so even the doctors couldn't believe what happened next.

"We never in a million years expected that Jacob would come up on the list four days after Cameron was transplanted," said Dr. Katherine Dell of Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital.

Jacob got his kidney over the weekend, and the boys' room at Rainbow has not been still since, with the Meadows' eight other biological and adopted children making their way through to help watch the kids and have a little fun.

It was a scene that was almost unimaginable when you think about how the boys came into the world.

"I think it's a miracle," said Beth Meadows.

Rick is a nuclear contamination specialist whose employer has been very supportive.

The Meadows also get a lot of help from fellow church members who are always willing to lend a hand.

The Meadows said they are willing to share their personal story to spread the word about how important organ donation is.
