CLEVELAND -- With gas prices soaring to more than $3 a gallon, some consumers are trying to save money any way they can, reported Consumer Specialist Angie Lau. At United Parcel Service, they've figured out a way to save millions of dollars in fuel savings, officials said. With 88,000 trucks on America's roads, one small change -- making only right turns -- has made a big difference. "They'll make right-hand turns only all up the street, and they'll try to do the same coming back, especially on major streets," said Phil Kane of UPS.Local UPS driver Ray Rivera has taken what he's learned on the job and applied it to his personal life."I always try to make right turns, especially with gas at $3," he said.Lau reported that UPS saved millions of dollars by making the modification. 5 On Your Side went on a test ride to see how it is done. It started at Chester Avenue and East 30th Street. The mileage is exactly the same, but in the first trip, only right turns are made. That trip took seven minutes and 35 seconds. In the second test, 5 On Your Side used the exact same route, but made only left turns. It took six minutes and 13 seconds.
Second Test
For the second test, 5 On Your Side got Rose Greenfield to help. She has an active teenager and runs a lot of errands.Barry Greenfield set out on his trip, but made left turns.Rose Greenfield made only right turns.5 On Your Side said the test proved that:- In real life, a right turn is a good guideline, but shouldn't be a rule.
- If you can, plan ahead so that all the stops are approached from the right.
- If you can't, go the shortest distance.
