Bus Driver Accused Of Attacking Student

POSTED: 8:16 pm EDT May 19, 2007

A bus driver for Olentangy Local Schools in Delaware County resigned from his job on Thursday after he allegedly assaulted a middle school boy on his bus.

Ira Hall quit when the school district placed him on administrative leave, NewsChannel5 partner ONN reported.

Hall was charged with assault and disorderly conduct.

Aaron O'Brien, 13, said he was on his way home from Liberty Middle School on May 11 when the assault occurred shortly after he boarded the bus.

"I was just standing up, having my foot in the aisle, talking to people in the back," O'Brien said.

The teenager said that Hall asked him to sit down. O'Brien said as he was trying to comply, but said he unintentionally bumped the driver.

"As I was sitting down, my foot accidentally hit his leg. And he said 'don't kick me,'" O'Brien said. "That's why, all of a sudden, he elbowed me in the face. I didn't know what to do."

The boy's mother said her son came home with a bloody lip. Ginger O'Brien said that she initially assumed her son got hurt by doing things a 13-year-old boy typically does.

When her son told her that Hall hurt him, Ginger O'Brien said she took pictures and called the Delaware County Sheriff's Office.

"That is when I actually got angry," Ginger O'Brien said.

Sheriff's deputies later showed the mother surveillance video from the bus that caught the exchange.

"You saw Aaron turn around on the tape and look -- and as Aaron turned around, the guy went in front and elbowed him in the mouth," Ginger O'Brien said.

Hall did not answer his door when asked to comment. Jim Malek, a neighbor, said there is no way that Hall would have done anything to harm a child.

"I have never even heard the man raise his voice," Malek said. "He's a wonderful neighbor - a person you would trust your kids with."

Malek said that Hall has watched his children on several occasions.

Hall worked for Olentangy Local Schools for about seven months.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
