A shooting involving an off-duty police officer left a 17-year-old dead early Friday morning.

The officer was working security at the apartment complex at East 79th Street when he allegedly shot and killed Angelo Miller, officials said.

911 Calls Released

The Cuyahoga County coroner said Miller died of a gunshot wound to the back. His death was ruled a homicide.

Officials said the off-duty police officer was called to the scene amid suspicion that people were breaking into cars at the Lexington Village apartment complex on the city's east side.

Witnesses told NewsChannel5 that Miller attempted to run over the police officer.

The officer has worked at Lexington Village for more than a decade. He also lives in the community.

Lt. Thomas Stacho said the officer investigated and recovered some property apparently taken from vehicles in the parking lot. The officer also noticed some smashed car windows and stereos missing.

He took the recovered property to the complex office, then went back to the scene to investigate further. The officer had a confrontation with Angelo Miller and noticed several car stereos in the back seat around 1:45 a.m. and fired shots. The car then crashed.

Miller's family members said they do not believe the story.

"He's afraid of the police," said his brother, Dante Kirkman. "If the police come, he's going to get on his knees and lay down."

Miller's family and other members of the community want answers about the shooting and what led to it.

"I just want justice for my son and I just want justice," his mother said.

"The black community and this family, they do not trust investigations by the policemen on a policeman," said community activist Art McKoy.

At least one witness confirmed what police said happened before the shots rang out.

"I came looked out the window and saw a guy that's running in the parking lot, seen a car right there like he was running the police officer over," said witness Antuan Woodley.

Miller was a student at East High School.

Authorities said Miller has been in and out of trouble for several years.

In September 2005 he was arrested for misdemeanor assault and was put on probation. He was later arrested for probation violation and failing to show up at a hearing.

He was taken away from his parents twice when he was younger.

Miller has two children. Both of them are 1 year old.

The officer involved in the shooting, 43-year-old John Lundy, is on paid administrative leave. He is an 18-year veteran of the force.

The use of force team is investigating the shooting.
