Man Says He Can't Build Wheelchair Ramp Due To Flooding

Trailer Park Resident Says Owner's Landscaping Created Drainage Problem

A Lorain County man said flooding is stopping him from building a wheelchair ramp for his disabled wife.

James and Lela Sabo are coming up on the 25th wedding anniversary but are facing challenging time, reported NewsChannel5's Paul Kiska.

Lela is living with multiple sclerosis and fell last year. Now she relies on a wheelchair and her husband to get around.

James Sabo wants to make coming and going easier for his wife by building a wooden wheelchair ramp but says it would sink or rot.

Sabo said the ground around his home at the Twin Lakes trailer park in Elyria has been turned into swampland.

He said the owner tried to clear trees and brush on his own and then tried to build up the ground with topsoil.

But Sabo said he believes bad landscaping created poor drainage and water flowing toward his trailer home.

Sabo wrote the owner of Twin Lakes and met with him, asking for help with better drainage.

The owner said snowmelt and heavy rain are causing flooding all over, but Sabo doesn’t blame Mother Nature, just the landscaping.

He said flooding is also damaging the foundation of his home. The trailer park owner said he understands Sabo's situation because his own wife died from M.S., but says he didn't cause the flooding.
