Police: Shooting Death Of Akron Teen Was Self-Inflicted

POSTED: 5:26 pm EDT March 19, 2007
UPDATED: 7:52 am EDT March 21, 2007

Police said the gunshot that killed an Akron teen over the weekend was self-inflicted.

It was originally thought that 19-year-old Demetrus R. Vinson was shot and killed by police after officers approached a car parked at Vinson's Victoria Avenue home.

Police had said that Vinson reached for a gun after officers approached and that the officers responded by firing into the car, killing Vinson.

However, a forensics investigation showed three shots were fired from officers with 9 mm weapons and that one shot was fired from within the car from a .45 caliber gun, reported NewsChannel5.

A coroner's report said that the shot that killed Vinson was at close-range and came from within the car.

A 15-year-old passenger originally said that Vinson did not reach for a gun when the car was approached, but later admitted to police that Vinson did have a gun.

He also told police that Vinson recently said that if he ever got into trouble he wouldn't go easily.
