CLEVELAND -- This is part two of a 5 On Your Side investigation. When we first met Dr. John Ball, we wanted to know why he hadn't paid back his loans that records indicated were delinquent, 5 On Your Side investigator Ron Regan reported.Regan: "Dr. Ball, why haven't you paid your college loans back?"
Ball: "As far as I know I have, sir."5 On Your Side checked and records show Ball owes more than $17,000 in dental school loans and interest. Ball told 5 On Your Side: "I talk to a guy now. I get something every month. Who do you send it to? I don't know, offhand. Actually they do an automatic deposit, I mean automatic credit."We checked that out, too, and found that not a dime has been paid for 14 years. But that's not all. It turns out Dr. Ball is hiding something else.Regan: "It appears your practicing denistry without a license. Is that true?
Ball: No, it's not. I'm in a dispute with the state dental board."Despite his protests, Regan reported that the state records show that Ball is not licensed. His license was suspended for failing to complete required continuing education. It is required so that dentists maintain their skills and protect patients. When 5 On Your Side went undercover, Ball was found to be open for business.Patient: "Do you know if Dr. Ball is accepting new patients?"
Dr. Ball: "Hi, I'm Dr. Ball, yes."
Patient: "Oh, hi."
Dr. Ball: "How are you?"
Patient: "I'm just moving into to the area."
Dr. Ball: "Oh, great."
Patient: "And I'm looking for a new dentist."
Dr. Ball: "Great, yes, we are."
Patient: "So you are accepting new patients?"
Ball: "Mm hmm." (Ball indicated that he was accepting new patients.)
Patient: "Alright, can I have a card or something?"
Later, Regan confronted Ball about the conversation.Regan: "We have you on videotape offering to see someone as a patient. Can you explain that?"Ball: "Yes, I have associates that work with me. I don't do the work."Regan reported that 5 On Your Side showed the Ohio Dental Board what we found."What I saw was Dr. Ball indicating to someone that he was seeing new patients, giving every impression that everything was fine when, in fact, it's not. So, he is currently not licensed to practice," said a board official.Just two weeks after 5 On Your Side visited Ball's office, he was arrested on suspicion of practicing without a license. He is due in court on Monday.
