Officer Awarded $800,000 In Discrimination Suit

A federal jury Friday ruled in favor of a white Cleveland police officer in his racial discrimination lawsuit against the police department.

Officer Edward Lentz Jr. alleged that he was unfairly used as a scapegoat after he shot and wounded a 12-year-old black boy.

He said he received degrading duties, was denied opportunities for overtime and was treated more harshly after the shooting than a black officer would have been.

Lentz was awarded $800,000 in the lawsuit.

City attorneys denied Lentz's accusations and the city said it plans to appeal the decision.
