Opening arguments started Thursday morning for a case involving a towel left inside a woman after a surgery.

Jeanne Clark is suing the Cleveland Clinic after a large towel was left inside her mother after a surgery. The surgery was done several years ago and Bonne Valle, 60, her mother died in 2002. Valle lived in Canton.

Brian Wilson, the family's attorney, said the towel was left behind Valle's left lung.

"Is it more likely than not that the towel caused pneumonia in the left lung only, not once, not twice, not three times, but four times over 6.8 years," Wilson said.

Wilson plans to present expert witnesses on the topic.

The clinic plans to present evidence that the towel actually extended her life and helped her to breathe.

She is suing for $2 million.
