CLEVELAND -- The old, eastbound Cuyahoga River Bridge on the Ohio Turnpike was demolished Monday morning. That backed up traffic for about 30 minutes.
The blast went off just after 7 a.m. The initial demolition used explosive charges to drop two 400-foot truss spans with a total length of about 400 feet. The truss spans are located directly over and adjacent to Riverview Road in Summit County, which was closed until Nov. 21. That's between exits 11 and 12 on the turnpike. Fourteen nearby houses were evacuated as a precaution.
A series of rolling roadblocks slowed traffic in the eastbound and westbound directions on the turnpike. Traffic also was stopped at select toll gates and service plazas during the demolition process. The 50-year-old bridge is being replaced by a new three-lane bridge. The complete demolition of the bridge will take several months. Work will continue throughout the winter. Once the original eastbound bridge is demolished, construction of the new westbound bridge will begin in the location of the old eastbound structure.
