CLEVELAND -- A 5 On Your Side investigation on the area's most dangerous shopping malls is getting results. One of the malls that made the list is now taking dramatic steps to help keep shoppers safe, reported investigator Ron Regan.Last week, NewsChannel5 dug deep into crime records from the last year, and Parmatown Mall was near the top of the list for crime, having the second highest numbers of stolen cars and theft from autos.Parmatown Mall general manager Frank Lanterman announced Monday that the mall is increasing its security."What we're trying to do is look into alternatives to get some eyes and ears here that could help in pointing some things out that perhaps get missed," Lanterman said. The new measures include help from Parma police."This year we've talked with security at Parmatown Mall. We're trying to form a good liaison to give better service than we already have," said Parma Police Chief Daniel Hoffman. This will include increasing patrols inside and outside the mall and hiring off-duty police officers and sheriff's deputies and security escorts. Both Christina Sochasky and Sandy Green saw the original report and said it made them more aware."Yeah, definitely. I mean, it caught my eye. I think it was a good thing. I think people are going to be a little more alert," said Sochasky.Green said, "I think it made more people aware there is crime in the mall and they need to be aware of that."Here are a few more safety tips: Avoid parking near vans, because someone could pull you inside. Also, don't sit in your car, because it could make you a target.
