CLEVELAND -- It's official. East 25th Street between St. Clair and Superior avenues has been renamed Gerald Levert Lane. It will be a secondary name like East 9th Street, which is also the Rock And Roll Boulevard. It's unknown when the street sign will be replaced. City officials who attended the memorial service of the late R&B singer Gerald Levert Friday said an emergency measure was enacted to rename a downtown street in memory of the singer. The emergency measure makes the change effective Nov. 20.During a memorial service Friday, many talked about how Levert could have lived anywhere in the world of his choice, but he chose to live in northeast Ohio. Levert first gained fame in 1986 as a member of the R&B trio LeVert, which also included his brother, Sean, and childhood friend Marc Gordon. They quickly racked up hits like "(Pop, Pop, Pop, Pop) Goes My Mind," "Casanova," and "Baby I'm Ready." Eddie Levert, Gerald Levert's father, also has a street named in honor of his group, the O'Jay's. It's called the O'Jay's Boulevard. The O'Jays were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.
