POSTED: 4:19 pm EST November 14, 2006
UPDATED: 7:18 am EST November 15, 2006

A small plane crashed Tuesday afternoon at the Akron-Canton Regional Airport, NewsChannel5 reported.

According to an airport representative, the single-engine Mooney piston-driven aircraft crashed on the airfield at 3:44 p.m.

Larry Herman, 45, was the only person onboard when his plane went down. He is in satisfactory condition at Akron General Hospital.

Witnesses feared the situation was going to be worse.

"I looked back to see him land and I saw he hit and his wings and everything went flying up in the air, and I like got really sick to my stomach because all I could think of people dying, because my mother was killed in a bad accident, and I got really upset and we went up the road and called 911," said witness Rachael Ashby.

The airport remained open during the cleanup.
