Kids Put Toys To Test

Which Toys Are Worthy Of Your Money?

More than 100 children from nine different cites participated in a Scripps Television toy test. There were new toys and old favorites, ones that wiggle and ones that make noise.

Here's how it worked. Six toy makers -- Hasbro, Leap Frog, Lego, Mattel, Blip Blip, and Battat sent their favorite and newest smile makers in hopes of making our kids and their parents roar.

NewsChannel5 had kids between the ages of 2 and 4 test all sorts of toys. Rob Gardner, a father of 2-year old triplet boys said, "If it kept them occupied for the better part of the day, then I would definitely get it."

In Cleveland, Tulsa, and Phoenix, Elmo's Restaurant was the favorite for the 2- to 4-year-old crowd. In second place was the Go Diego Go, Animal Rescue Railway.

The third favorite toy, based on parent evaluations, was Little People Learn About Town. Interestingly, the most expensive toy, Kota, a large animated dinosaur that kids can climb on did not place in the top three, but still was something many kids were intrigued by. Most parents said the $300 price tag was enough to say no.

The most expensive item for our 5- to 7-year-olds turned out to be their favorite. It was the Computer Cool School priced at $60. It attaches to your own home computer allowing kids to learn the three "R"s.

Taking a second place finish in Baltimore, West Palm Beach and Kansas City, the Bulls Eye Baseball was a home run. And in in third place was the Color Me Gemz jewel set.

Our oldest age group was kids between the ages of 8 and 12, tested in Detroit, Tampa and Cincinnati. Newer, hipper versions of board games were a hit. Monopoly Here and Now was the wealthiest vote getter. It travels the globe and the properties reach millions of dollars. And instead of cash, you play with plastic.

The least expensive of the lot, came in second place. It was the Zero G game for $10. It could be used alone or with friends and both boys and girls liked it. In third place there was a tie -- I-Dog Dance and Didj Custom Gaming Center. The I-Dog gives kids a chance to hear their favorite songs. It's a speaker system for their iPod. And the Didj Custom Gaming Center is a hand held game that is educational.

Jakks Pacific was also invited to participate in our unscientific test but they declined.

All the toys will be donated to charity.
