CLEVELAND -- Wouldn't it be great if there was one place to go to find a better deal on all your monthly bills, including the mortgage, car insurance and phone bills?
Well, we've found it. NewsChannel5 reported that it's on the Internet at lowermybills.com.
Her long-distance phone bill used to be one of Janel Bergum's most dreaded monthly bills. It was at least $50 dollars a month, often more than $100, and occasionally much, much higher.
"My husband works out of town a lot," she said. "My phone bill used to be like $400."
Now, it's about $10 a month for 150 minutes, and it's a bill that she can hardly wait to pay.
"Usually, the big ones I have to wait for payday or something," Bergum said. "It felt good. I can pay this one, get it out of here, no late fees, no collections."
Bergum found cheaper long distance by using lowermybills.com.
The site makes it easy to comparison shop for services like phone, gas, electric, mortgages, credit cards and insurance.
Give it a zip code, an e-mail address and the answers to a few questions, and the site gives you competing offers.
You choose the one that's best for you and sign up online.
"No one is really doing the breadth of service, which is important, because it also saves time," said Matt Coffin, chief executive officer of lowermybills.com "You don't have to go to 14 different Web sites for your monthly bills, and we've really become the biggest and the best company helping people pay less using the Internet."
Coffin started lowermybills.com in 1999, after he experienced frustrations finding a one-stop shop online to lower his bills.
His company survived the dot com crash that soon followed -- not only survived it, but thrived.
"I think the big reason for that is that consumers love us," Coffin said. "It's a free service, and it provides real honest-to-goodness value, which is we put money back in your wallet."
After lowering her phone bill, Bergum will save at least $500 a year keeping her long-distance family in touch.
Lowermybills.com is a free service.
The service provider pays Coffin a commission when a person switches to that company.
The site does not rely on advertising, so users won't see any pop-up or pop-under ads. Coffin said that ads would just slow down the process.
He said that even the most lengthy application -- about 80 questions for auto insurance -- takes only about 10 minutes.
