Northeast Ohio consumer complaints increase in 2013; phone service issues top list

CLE BBB fields a record 1.15M consumer inquires

CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Better Business Bureau reports consumer complaints were up in 2013, with a record number of residents turning to its services.

For the first time in its history, consumer inquiries to the Cleveland BBB topped 1 million.

BBB Serving Greater Cleveland issued over 1,152,000 reviews on businesses and charities in 2013, compared to 978,000 the previous year. 

“While overall demand for our services increases annually,” said BBB president, David Weiss, “hitting the one-million mark is indicative of the value placed on BBB pre-purchase information.”

Meanwhile, Weiss reports the BBB had an increase in consumer complaints over the past year.

"BBB Serving Greater Cleveland closed 9,717 consumer complaints concerning businesses located within our service area during 2013, compared to 9,702 the previous year," said Weiss.

The top 10 industries about which Cleveland-area consumers filed complaints with the BBB were:

  1. Phone Service (including cell phones)
  2. Used Auto Dealers
  3. New Auto Dealers
  4. TV/Cable Services
  5. Collection Agencies
  6. Furniture
  7. Banks
  8. Roofing Contractors
  9. Internet Shopping
  10. Department Stores
