Cleveland catering company holds job fair for jobless Sammy's employees

CLEVELAND - Cleveland's Marigold Catering is reaching out to help the dozens of former Sammy's Catering employees who lost their jobs.

Marigold hosted a job fair at its Lakeside Avenue facility and invited Sammy's employees to meet a group of northeast Ohio restaurants and businesses.

Vendors taking applications included Now Valet, Embassy Suites, Chagrin Valley Country Club, Lucy's Sweet Surrender Bakery, Tom's Country Place Restaurant, Executive Caterers and Windows on the River.

"We have the ability, we have the resources and we can reach out, so we thought we're going to do it," said Marigold owner Joan Rosenthal.

"The catering community in Cleveland is a very tight-knit group," said Marigold manager Eran Weber. "We want to do our part to help make up for this unfortunate situation."

Sammy's, one of Cleveland's well-known restaurant and catering operations, suddenly announced the closing of its facilities on Aug.5, leaving many of it's employees stunned.

The company gave employees no advanced notice and has only issued the following statement:

"On August 5, 2013, City Life Inc. d/b/a Sammy's announced it has made the decision to close its facilities. We are currently in negotiations with a local caterer to transition our existing clients. Existing clients can use TRANSITIONPLAN@sammys.com for updates."

Sammy's employees, like Krystal Kovacik, who attended the Marigold job fair told NewsChannel5 they didn't really see the closing coming.

"It was a total surprise to me, I just could believe something like this could happen," Kovacik said. "I'm deeply upset;I don't know what I'm going to do. I'm really disappointed in the management and the ownership of the company. I was always under the impression that this was the best company."

Kovacik brought several resumes to the job fair and said she believes she made some key contacts.

Still, many Sammy's employees are finding it hard to get over the impact the Sammy's closing has had on their lives. Some of the employees even formed their own Facebook page in an effort to assist them in their job search.

Brandon Nebeker worked for Sammy's for the past year and found out from his manager that he no longer had a job.

"I've got 4-month-old twins at home. I kind of need the job," he said.  "You don't think 'Hey, I'm going to wake up on a Monday morning and not have a job.'"
