NY lawmakers warn of spike in milk prices without Farm Bill

The price of milk could double if Congress doesn't pass a new farm bill.

The current farm bill, which dates to 2008, expired Sept. 30; a replacement has cleared the Senate but not the House of Representatives.

Without a bill in place, New York Sen. Charles Schumer said the law would revert to 1940s-era policies requiring the government to buy dairy products at prices well above market rate.

The National Milk Producers Federation said this could push milk prices above $6 a gallon.
