After receiving more than 100 complaints in the past year, the Better Business Bureau has downgraded a northeast Ohio health club to an "F" rating.
The BBB has slapped its lowest rating, F , on Urban Active in Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus and Dayton.
The Cleveland clubs are at Crocker Park and Legacy Village.
The BBB in Cleveland said it has gotten 183 complaints filed against Urban Active. The company failed to respond to 51 complaints.
The BBB said most complaints concern billing errors, and continued billing after a contract expired.
"Complaints received by the BBB are regarding sales practices, contract disputes and billing issues. Additionally consumers have reported, for example, difficulty canceling contracts, misrepresentation regarding contract terms, trouble contacting management staff, rude staff members, continued billing after cancellation and difficulty obtaining refunds promised by employees," The BBB website posted.
Matarese has received many complaints from former members claiming their credit card continued to be billed after they ended their membership.
An attorney for Urban Active told the Columbus Dispatch that it is addressing the issues, and contends it has tens of thousands of satisfied members.
