CLEVELAND - A new app gives you access to a used car's vehicle history report while you're still shopping.
Used car problems top the complaints to our consumer unit and the Better Business Bureau in 2011.
Often, drivers don't do enough research before buying the car and face costly repairs after they drive it off the lot.
A vehicle history report, like CARFAX, shows you if the car has been recalled, in an accident or if there's been odometer fraud.
A new CARFAX app allows you to access that history report at your fingertips with an Apple smartphone or tablet.
"Most cars produced now have a barcode on the dashboard or inside the driver's side door jam on a sticker. If you don't find one and you're buying from a private seller, you can still type in the license plate. If you're shopping at the dealer, say show me the CARFAX. They will give you one for free," Chris Basso of CARFAX said.
An Android version is expected soon.
While the app is free, you still have to pay for the CARFAX report. You set up your payment information before you download and use the app.
It's also a good idea to have a mechanic inspect any vehicle before you buy it. These small investments can save you big bucks in costly repairs later.
